How to Reduce Kids' Sports Injuries

Each year, 1.4 million American children suffer sports injuries, many of them preventable. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the following steps could reduce the injury rate:

  • Make sure your children have a physical examination before playing sports.

  • Make sure that your children are given conditioning and training exercises appropriate to their ages and that they do them.

  • Teach them the proper techniques of falling and landing.

  • Make sure they wear properly fitting safety equipment, such as shoulder pads, helmets and footwear.
